5 Things That Separate One Zinc Sunscreen Stick From Another

Two boxes can print the same SPF. Wearing them is another matter.

Sunscreen is the one thing you put on and then take on faith. These five things decide how much faith it asks of you.

  1. 1

Read the SPF and the words around it

Look for the number and for broad spectrum wording, which means UVA and UVB are both named. A bare SPF figure tells you less.

  2. 2

    Find what does the protecting

On a zinc stick, the zinc is the point. Check that the box says so and how it describes it.

  1. 3

Decide whether you want a tint

A tint shows where it has been applied. This box has three, yellow, orange and red, and calls them visibly tinted barrier creams.

  2. 4

Match it to where you will be

The box states protection through weather, waves and perspiration and calls it high-performance for high-exposure days. Those are the brand's statements; read the directions for how they apply.

  3. 5

Read the directions, not just the front

The front says what it is. The directions say how to use it and how often. No page can replace that part.
